AMARC ASIA PASIFIC, UAJY AND JRKI COLLABORATE FOR COMMUNITY RADIO DEVELOPMENT

The World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) Asia-Pacific, University of Atma Jaya Yogyakarta (UAJY) and the Community Radio Association of Indonesia (Jaringan Radio Komunitas Indonesia, JRKI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate for the development of community radio broadcasting in Indonesia and the rest of Asia-Pacific region.

The signing of the MOU that took place on 12 July 2019 at the UAJY in Yogyakarta , Indonesia has amplified possibilities for the partner organizations to further develop strategic cooperation for dealing with diverse range of issues concerning community broadcasting that will include but will not be limited to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction through community radio stations, advancement of sustainability of community broadcasting including technological sustainability, gender empowerment, supporting the rights of migrant and displaced communities, etc.

At the same time, the partner organizations will enhance the creation, management and preservation of knowledge about community broadcasting and promote a user friendly accessibility.

AMARC-AP, UAJY and JRKI will be launching activities with the aim of improving understanding of ground level realities of community broadcasting, identifying gaps and implementing activities in support of local community based initiatives. An AMARC desk is being set up at the UAJY to mark the signing of the MOU and to promote availability of information about community broadcasting for students and teachers. Cross country exchange of community broadcasters and media & communication students will be another activity that the partners seek to implement in the near future.

The MoU will develop an atmosphere of cooperation for academic and community radio development and to promote relations and mutual understanding between all institutions involved.
